The best way to add initial strength and size is to lift heavy
weights with compound movements. It builds the foundation
by strengthening your bones, joints and ligaments so that
you can support the muscle your are building.
You may or may not know that Arnold and Franco Columbu
both competed in strength sports before getting into bodybuilding.
Here's a pic of Arnold in 1966 at 19 years old deadlifting
616 lbs!
Lifting heavy is a great way to train when you start, but it's not
the only way.
the only way.
Once you have the size and strength you need there's nothing
wrong with varying your training and working out more like
Arnold and the others did later on in their bodybuilding careers
similar to what you'd see in the old school movie Pumping Iron.
Pumping the muscles with lighter weights, taking shorter rest
periods and keeping tension on the muscle longer.

Lets be honest, heavy lifting for years and years straight can lead
to some achy joints and pain especially as you get older and
need more time to recover.
Keep training hard,

to check out a program that is similar to the workouts from
Pumping Iron that use lighter weights check out Steve Holman's
Old School New Body program.

he's over 40. He looks a decade younger though!
