Training for a Tough Mudder
 
You definitely need endurance, but it's not like running a half marathon
or anything like that because every 1/2 mile or you come to another
obstacle.  That gives you a chance to catch your breathe from the 
running.
 
In my opinion the best way to train for something like this is to do
MRT workouts or Metabolic Resistance Training.
 
Essentially, Metabolic Resistance Training is any type of workout
where you train with an elevated heart rate while allowing insufficient
recovery. Think supersets and circuits.
 
A long time colleague of mine Craig Ballantyne is known for designing
some of the best MRT workouts around.  
 
And yes he has done the Tough Mudder several times as well.
 
If you want to train for a Mud Race or just want to build some muscle
and lose fat without long-ass boring cardio check out this special he set
