strength & size (at the same time!)
Published: Fri, 11/30/12
The other day I was training at Powerhouse Gym in downtown Tampa
and it's amazing to see the variety of workouts being performed by
all different kinds of people.
Let me categorize a few training styles that I observed:
Pumpers - There were some huge muscle monsters doing some what
looked like light dumbbell workouts with lots of time under tension
and high reps.
Machine Specialists -These folks don't make it to the free weights and
spend the majority of their time jumping from machine to machine.
Cardio Machine Only: Not only do these people never make it to
the free weights, they never make it to the weight machines either.
They jump around from cardio machine to cardio machine.
They jump around from cardio machine to cardio machine.
Hybrid Cardio or MRT: With these workouts you combine weights
and cardio into one exercise and can be done in a circuit fashion.
There is little rest if any at all with these sessions.
Sport Specific: These dudes and dudettes are using foot drill ladders,
doing sprints and working on imbalances.
Strength Athletes: Typically lifting insane amounts of weight and spending
more time resting than training. Incredible to see in action.
Group Classes: Just show up for a class and do what the instructor says.
You get the point..the list goes on and on.
Now you're probably expecting me to rip into each training style and
tell you it's all wrong.
But I won't be that predictable :)

HERE IS THE WEIRD PART:
=======================
You can find big strong and lean looking muscular bodies performing
any of the different style workouts above. Regardless of age or sex.
What! Why is that, you ask?
Okay here's the thing. You may or may not know I"ve been training for over
21 years, met people from all over the world to share ideas with and interviewed
hundreds of the best physique and strength stars in the land for the Web site
over the past 10+ years.
There is a huge common denominator that all guys with a descent framework
of muscle and strength share.
REGARDLESS of what they are doing today, they all build the FOUNDATION
of their physique with Basic Compound Lifts for low to moderate reps.
Initially this is what will take all hard-gainers and skinny guys to a level they are
proud of. Your first few years should be devoted to a power-bodybuilding
This simply means: You'll focus your workout around the main big lifts that use
the most muscles and release the most muscle building hormones. You can than
add in assistance or bodybuilding exercises for the extra pump at the end of
your main lifts.
If this works so well, why doesn't everyone do it?
Well, they probably did at some point, but once you get to the basic size and
strength level you are relatively happy with there's some wiggle room for you to
start messing around with any other workout style you want to try.
You already have the foundation of CNS, bone and ligament strength to match
the muscle on your body. After that feel free to try anything you want and
experiment with something you may find more interesting, enjoyable or just
curious about.
