an important strength lesson (I was wrong)
Published: Sat, 01/14/12
It's Saturday morning which reminds me of the time I went to
go check out one of my first powerlifting meets several years
ago.....
During warm-ups my buddy and I were placing some friendly
bets on who we thought were going to be the strongest dudes.
Since I was a newbie to the sport I didn't know anybody's
numbers or rankings so I was going by looks alone when I
made my picks.
I learned a valuable lesson that day that I'd like to pass on
to you...
You see, I thought the guys with the huge arms, massive chest
muscles and rippling quads were going to dominate.
Boy was I wrong!
It turned out the guys with the big thick back muscles and strong
hamstrings were the ones that lifted the most weight!
It makes perfect sense now of course but at the time I remember
being surprised.
The moral of the story is....
It's not the muscles you see in the mirror that are responsible for
insane strength in the squat, bench and deadlift.

If you're like me and you're serious about your strength development
I suggest you add some more back training to your current routine.
A great place to get some exercise ideas are from Nick Nilsson's,
"Best Back Exercises You've Never Heard Of" guide.
