Vince Gironda, the "Iron Guru"

by Mike Westerdal of CriticalBench.com
A good friend of mine and Bodybuilder named Alan Palmieri had the good fortune to
start lifting weights back in the 60s during the Golden Age of Bodybuilding.
During
that time, he got to know a lot of the greats who were just starting
out-including
Vince Gironda. Alan and Vince developed a professional
relationship, regularly talking
on the phone and exchanging letters.
With his new book, Vince Gironda: Legend and Myth,
Alan shares those conversations
with the world and by doing so he
provides the rest of us with the opportunity to gain insight
into
Vince-the man, the legend and his proven ideas about physique building.
Vince had a reputation not just for being one of the most effective
and influential trainers
to ever step inside a gym, but also for being
one of the most hard-headed, outspoken
and 'in-your-face' figures in
bodybuilding.
There was only one way to train-his way. If you disagreed with him or didn't do what
he expected, that was the end of your relationship with Vince.
One "But Vince" was all it took to get thrown out of his gym. Vince
firmly believed in his
training philosophies and nobody was going to
tell him any different. And the truth is, his
results speak for
themselves.
Vince knew really worked to build bigger, more powerful muscles and
he wasn't going
to 'water it down' or compromise his approach for
anyone. If a guy didn't follow Vince's
directions exactly, then he was gone.
His innovative and pioneering ways generated a firestorm of
controversy and made him one
of the most polarizing figures in
bodybuilding. For example, Vince was one of the very first
experts to
understand that doing endless sit-ups and leg raises does nothing to
eliminate fat
around the middle. Everyone who trained in his gym knew
how he felt about that and if he
caught a guy doing them, they guy would
get thrown out.
When every other fitness expert started touting low-fat and reduced-calorie foods, Vince's
guys were eating steak, raw eggs and cream. He called this the 'Stone Age Diet'
because it was based on whole, unprocessed foods like what our ancestors ate for tens of
thousands of years.
calorie foods-his guys ate like MEN and they developed bigger, more powerful,
muscular physiques than everyone else too.
