can body weight training REALLY build muscle?

Published: Wed, 06/22/11

The question of the week seems to be, "Can Body Weight Only
Workouts REALLY build muscle?"

Now if you're a hard gainer skinny dude and you want to pack
on solid muscle mass, body weight training is not the answer.

If you're training for maximum strength, body weight training is
not going to help you that much either.

====================================
WHEN IS BODY WEIGHT TRAINING GOOD?

-Well if you've been lifting heavy for a long time you'll be really
surprised by how hard body weight training can be.  I have a lot
of friends that weigh over 250 lbs and can bench press 300-400
pounds but have trouble doing a couple pull-ups.

If you're totally off balance or only strong at certain lifts, bodyweight
training could be something good for you to work on.  It's called
relative strength and you should have some to stay well rounded.

-If you're just looking to burn some fat, tighten up your muscles a bit,
and get some cardio work done in fast challenging 30-minute workouts
body weight training could do the trick.

-If you're short on time you can do bodyweight workouts when you're
in a rush.

-When you travel for work or business and can't find a quality gym
to train at some bodyweight training is better than missing your workouts
for days on days.

THE BIGGEST BODY WEIGHT TRAINING MYTH!

I've been guilty of thinking this myself, big time!

I used to think body weight workouts were for pansies.  Real men and
athletes lift heavy weight and get huge right?

Well after years upon years of powerlifting and bodybuilding style workouts
some of my flexibility and cardio went downhill fast so I decided to work
on my weakness.

We've been using some pretty intense bodyweight circuits at Strength Camp
where I"ve been training in the morning lately, and I have nearly puked on
numerous occassions!

I'm serious.  Bodyweight workouts can and have made grown men cry.

Now I'm not talking about Richard Simmons type aerobics or any wussie stuff
like that.  I'm talking about Body Weight Workouts designed by the best
coaches in the arena; Namely, Adam Steer and Ryan Murdock.

These are the same guys that designed those insanely popular Tacfit Commando
workouts last year that a lot of military personnel were using.

Sure they've gone a bit mainstream to appeal to more people.  The workouts
system is called, ShapeShifter and it blows their previous stuff out of the water.

SUMMER VACATION?
I don't know if I told you but later this summer my wife and our new baby
daughter Karina are taking a 3-week trip to Sweden to visit relatives.  We are
super excited!

Why am I telling you this?

Well maybe you've got a trip this summer.  Is there a gym near your destination?

If not do what we're going to do.  Print out some ShapeShifter bodyweight workouts
and come back from vacation looking, feeling and performing as good you as you did
before you left!

Bottom line: Adam and Ryan's new ShapeShifter program gets my endorsement.
They are good guys. They know their stuff and they are the best bodyweight coaches
out there.

Please do not let the ShapeShifter cartoon fool you.  He's suppossed to look
friendly and inviting so that more people will feel comfortable trying these workouts.

But these workouts are really tough and not for everyone, okay?  If you're not used
to this kind of training you're in for a rude awakening.  So don't let the cutsie cartoon
dude trick you into thinking these are pansie easy workouts....they are NOT!

Wow this email got long.  Gotta run.

Keep (bodyweight) training hard,
